Top 10 reasons NOT to go the free route
You may be wondering why HTTPS conversion is worth paying for instead of going the free route with your host.
This is what you get for free.
♦ Your site is not actually converted to HTTPS.
♦ A plugin is used to redirect all of your links, including those called by your theme like your logo, favicon, links and images in widgets and more – not just the page/post link. Your stuck with that plugin that may break or no longer be supported
♦ You’re stuck at your host, as each has their own duct tape / chicken wire way of doing it.
♦ You are left to mop up all of the mixed media issues. And a Content Security Policy to block them could break your site or cause other issues.
♦ Site elements can break. You want to know about and take measures with those BEFORE you convert.
♦ You may get a green padlock only because non HTTPS elements are being blocked by the browser.
♦ The regex redirect used by hosts to force HTTPS can cause up to 4 redirects before landing on the actual page. That is both a performance and security issue. (I know. I tested 14 of them.)
♦ No extra security headers are added, including the one required by Google to submit your site to Chrome’s Safe Preload list (which all other browsers copy, with Google’s blessing.)
♦ Your Google Analytics and Search Console accounts are not properly updated.
The #1 Reason
If the free way worked well, I would have done it for my own sites. I’m in the same boat as you.
Instead, I invested over 100 hours of research and testing to find what did work well.
Now I help my clients do it right and save designers all that research and headache too.
How it Works
This gives me the info I need to get us started.
Pre Conversion Checklist
I’ll provide a checklist in a secure client folder for:
- account info
- site elements to check for https readiness
I’ll verify all site elements and ensure we are ready to convert and we’ll set a date.
And we’ll both verify that all site functions work prior to the conversion. You wouldn’t believe how many broken contact forms and optins we’ve found that clients didn’t know had an issue!!
Day of Conversion
Start Pre-Conversion Process
I’ll do all the prep work and notify you.
I’ll put the site in maintenance mode and notify you that the conversion has begun.
You’ll want to be on standby to help check the site at the mid-point. If anything is amiss, it takes just a minute to switch back. (That’s because I convert a copy of your database.)
I’ll install final security headers and testing. We’ll both check the site thoroughly and then I’ll update all Google related accounts and submit your site to Chrome’s safe preload list.
The more you know about your site, the less you pay!
The process usually takes 3-5 hours at my low, hourly tech rate.
We start with a pre-conversion checklist of site elements affected by conversion.
The faster we complete that checklist, the more you save.
FYI, this is where the investment my site audit clients made really pays off. They are educated DIY site owners that know what’s going on with their site.
