Listen to the podcast
Last week I played around with FireTalk’s new screen sharing feature and I really like it. In fact, I can zoom much better with it than with vMix.
I’m so pleased that I’ll be moving the BlogAid Live Show to FireTalk this week.
So you’re always notified of new shows and can catch replays.
I’ve enjoyed being on Facebook Live, but I really need a good Blab replacement to do interview shows. FireTalk will give me that ability.
I’ll still be on Facebook Live with my BlogAid Today tips and promo videos for posts and shows.

See what plugins I use on every site to increase security and productivity. Plus, discover a super tip for easily finding them in the WordPress plugins repository.
And, see how I configure each of the plugins with settings for max performance too.
And on that note, I want to jump right into this week’s tips.
Video Marketing Tips
I’ve been taking lots of screenshots and notes while I was playing with FireTalk this past week and I’ve got a new course outline underway.
So, look for that to be added to the Video Marketing Library soon. I hope to have the bulk of it completed this week. That’s because I’ll be using the new defunct Blab course for the basic outline because they are so similar. And that’s going to speed things up.
We knew it was coming, but now it’s official. Blab has been declared dead by the developers.
You can read my post from yesterday about
- why this happened
- the disconnect between users and developers that lead to it
- why I’m grateful for Blab
- and what to do with your Blab replays
Lessons to Be Learned from the Death of Blab
We can learn a lot from the disconnect between Blab and it’s users.
Blab is not the only one closing up shop. Yesterday, Google announced that they are shutting down Hangouts on Air on Sept. 12.
They want everyone to move to their new streaming platform YouTube Live.
The Venture Beat article I have linked for you shows how to connect your HOA channel to YouTube Live so you can continue broadcasting your shows.
Seems one of the big reasons for this move is a continued effort to disconnect G+ from any Google product. That doesn’t sound good for G+, does it?
WordPress 4.6 Release
We’re expecting the final version of WordPress 4.6 to start rolling out today.
I’ll have a video tour for you soon.
In the meantime, see my post on What’s Under the Hood of WordPress 4.6 because there were many dev-level changes that are invisible to end-users, but things you definitely need to know about. Some of them will impact your plugins and other site functions.
Update Plugins First
I’m already seeing a slew of plugin updates to be in compliance with the WordPress 4.6 release.
And I imagine we’ll see several more after the release.
So, be sure you have a full backup, update your plugins, check your site, get another backup, and then update WordPress, then get another backup and be ready for the next round of plugin updates.
Contact Form 7 Issues
Be sure to check that your contact form is still working if you’ve recently updated your Contact Form 7 plugin. I’m not having trouble with it, but I’ve heard from a few folks that it is returning an error message instead of sending the email.
Because of all the validation issues with this plugin, I’ll be looking into other contact forms for us to use by this fall.
WP Rollback Plugin
And if you do have trouble with the contact plugin, you can go back to a previous version if you already had the WP Rollback plugin installed.
This is one of those plugins I won’t do a site without now. It has saved my bacon twice already.
If a plugin update goes whack, it will let you roll back to a previous version. It will work on most all plugins, but be sure to check your plugins list for any that don’t show a rollback link.
This is one of the plugins I’ll be talking about in the show on Wednesday.
In case you missed the live show last week, the replay of the BlogAid Live show on the causes and fixes of site downtime is available for you.
I’ve included show notes and links that were mentioned too.
- Causes of downtime
- Resources to monitor downtime
- Downtime prevention
- What to do if your host is down for days
That’s a wrap for this week’s Tips Tuesday.
