Kadence Author Box - How to Set Up

Preview of Completed Author Box

Let’s have a look at what we’ll be creating in this tutorial.

We’re at the bottom of one of my posts on my Heartwood Art woodworking site.

This author box contains:

  • My avatar and name
  • Info about me and this site
  • A link to my About page
  • A link to my newsletter optin
  • Social follow icons where I post

Okay, let’s jump in and make this thing.

WordPress User Checks

Email

Your WordPress User email needs to be connected to your Gravatar account. This is your verified digital identify online.

Check your email:

  • In the left admin sidebar of your WP site, click Users.
  • You should be able to see the email you are using here.
  • But let’s click your User to see where that info is held.
  • Scroll down to the Contact Info section and see the email you are using.
  • Either create a Gravatar account with that same email, or check to see that is the one connected to your Gravatar account.

FYI, Gravatar is owned by Automattic, the same parent company as WordPress. So, if you have a WordPress.com or WordPress.org login, the same one should work for Gravatar, or any of the other services/sites that are owned by Automattic.

Be sure to fill out your Gravatar profile and use an image for your Avatar that you want to display in your Author Box. This is also the same image that will display in your comment replies if you have Show Avatars turned on in Settings > Discussion.

Social Profile Links

In your WP User, in the Contact Info section, fill in the URLs for your social profiles, like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and more.

These will auto populate with icons in your Author Box.

Unfortunately, these icons will appear in the order of this list of fields in your author box.

Bio Info

In your WP User, scroll down to the About Yourself section.

In Biographical Info, input what you want to display as the text in your Author Box.

And add a link to your About page. You will need to add this as HTML code.

Here’s a code sample:

<a href="https://mysite.com/about /">More about me</a>

This will improve your SEO as it will be super easy for search engines to link the author of this post to their author about page.

Newsletter Optin

Your author box is a great place to include a link to where folks can optin to your newsletter too.

FYI, this is why it is a good idea to have a page just for your optin – so you can link directly to it on your site. Or, if you have a pop up that you can link to, you can use that.

Again, you’ll need to input that text and link in HTML code.

Profile Picture

In your WP User, scroll down to the Profile Picture.

If you are properly connected to your Gravatar account, the image you uploaded there as your avatar should be displaying in the Profile Picture section.

Save

Once all of your changes are complete, scroll down to the bottom of your profile page.

Click the Update Profile button.

Author Box Configuration

Now let’s set up your author box.

To access the Kadence Author Box settings

  • In the left admin sidebar, go to Appearance > Customize
  • In the sidebar, click Posts/Page Layout
  • In the sidebar, click Single Post Layout – this is where your author box settings will be

Configure Author Box

  • Scroll down to the toggle for Show Post Author Box.
    • Ensure it is on (will be blue).
  • Author Box Style
    • Leave at Normal for left aligned or set to Center
  • Use Author Archive Link
    • Ensure it is on (will be blue).
    • You need this on so it will pick up your posts from your WP User’s author archives, even if you are the only author on your site
  • In the top right of the sidebar, click the Publish button.
  • Click the X to close this sidebar

View Author Box

While logged in:

  • visit one of your posts
  • Scroll down to the bottom to view your Author Box

You should see the following that you entered in your WP User:

  • Your avatar
  • The text in your bio
  • Social follow icons

If all is well, purge your site’s caches so that the new author box will display on your site to logged out users.

Or, if you need to make adjustments, do so in your WP User.

That’s It!
