AI and SEO
Is SEO Dead?
Hardly.
But I sure hear a LOT of folks saying that AI search is going to replace traditional search.
Yes, I agree with that, but it’s just a change of interface, and certainly not the death of SEO.
Let me explain.
Where SEO is Very Much Still Alive
But other things are already replacing traditional search – like TikTok.
More folks are getting their info, news, and shopping recommendations from TikTok these days.
And TikTok took notice and beefed up the search engine part of the platform.
So, SEO is very much alive and well on TikTok.
Same with YouTube.
SEO on YouTube is different than SEO on the blog post where you embedded your video.
And younger folks don’t watch TV or surf the web. They watch YouTube.
Same with X (Twitter). It has long been THE place to get up to the minute news reporting.
Where AI Finds Its Info
AI models are mostly trained on the exact same info that search uses, which is stuff published on the web.
Google and Bing have been using AI behind the scenes to deliver search results for the last 1.5 decades.
Testing AI vs Search
I’ve been working with Google’s Duet.ai in Workspace.
I created a Sheet and asked Duet to populate it with the troubleshooting steps to recover your website from the dreaded WSOD (White Screen of Death).
Duet populated the cells with numbered steps and actions to take.
And they were in the right order too.
So, I could very easily give this info to a chatbot on my site to provide an answer to that question from a visitor.
I created another Sheet and asked Duet to populate it with a features and price comparison table of the top 5 blenders.
And it gave me 8 columns of comparative info, including the brand, its specs, and the prices.
Then I entered those same 2 queries into Google Search.
Guess what?
The SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages) I got were exactly the same as what Duet populated in my Sheets.
Just a Different Interface
All of the “knowledge” that Google has is in their AI models from what it has crawled on the web.
If you’re asking a question that is similar to a query you would put into search, it doesn’t matter where you ask the question – Google Search, Bard, Duet in Workspace, etc.
You’re going to get the same response from the AI that’s behind it all.
Current Info Matters
The only difference between AI search and traditional search is going to be whether or not the interface you’re using is current with what’s on the web at that time.
Traditional search is going to win that race.
But TikTok and X are going to remain strong competitors for breaking news.
Citing Sources
All search engines and all AIs need to crawl what’s published on the web to train their models and keep them current.
Not allowing these main AI bots to crawl your site is a mistake, in my opinion.
Here’s why.
The big fight with the main AI platforms like Google and OpenAI (ChatGPT) is not citing its sources.
We, the folks who publish content on the web, are going to win that battle.
The fact is, your site is going to get crawled by AI bots.
Letting the main ones do it freely is the only way your content has a chance to be cited as the source.
Will AI Kill SEO?
No. AI depends on SEO to find the best info on topics.
That’s why it’s so important for you to keep doing all you can to ensure your content is considered the best.
The Real Problem Facing Traditional Search
Google has one of the most powerful AIs on the planet.
One of the reasons they have lagged behind OpenAI in releasing it is due to their revenue model.
Google runs on ads – they make up 80% of its revenue.
They are slowly trying to build a revenue model that is more like Microsoft.
Yes, Bing’s revenue model is ads too. But it is not the big breadwinner for the parent company.
Microsoft has products for sale.
And they partnered with OpenAI, which started out as a non-profit but has become a product for sale.
Google’s got matching products, but they are aimed at enterprise level businesses.
OpenAI and Microsoft are providing products to businesses of all sizes.
Google is now trying to appeal to that same market by making its AI offerings cheaper, like Duet being released in Workspace’s Standard plan.
The new AI battle for the masses is going to center around privacy and security.
Google is going to win that race.
That has everything to do with why I’ve waited to start building AI systems for small teams until now, and why I’m doing that in Workspace with Duet instead of using OpenAI and ChatGPT.
It’s also why I don’t think SEO is dead, and why I do think it’s just going to be a change of interface.
Social Media Tips
What Happens Every Minute On the Internet 2023 Edition
Social Media Today has a nice infographic on what happened every single minute of 2023 on the internet.
When you look at this chart, keep in mind that some notable players are missing, like TikTok and YouTube, and both of those have insanely huge numbers in watchtime. So, I’ll provide the best estimate here for YouTube – 1 billion views an hour, which is 16.6 million views a minute. I could not find this stat for TikTok, but it is the 6th leading social app in the world.
And speaking of the world, keep in mind that this infographic is global activity, and it’s super high in places like China and India and other countries that you may not do business with.
Besides having a video presence, I want to call out a few other places where you might want to focus your attention, according to this chart:
- Facebook – 4M post likes a minute
- Instagram – 694K reels via DM a minute
- X – 360k tweets a minute
- Google – 6.3M searches a minute
People Are Looking For Help and Entertainment
Keep in mind that TikTok and YouTube are their own search engines, and that X is also crawled by Google.
On ChatGPT, there are nearly 7k prompts per minute, but not all of them are from citable sources. But the fact is, folks are searching for info and help on ChatGPT, and may find their info faster than trying to do a regular Google search.
What’s important to keep in mind is that if folks need to see how something is done, not just have a text description of it, they are going to look for videos.
And videos are where folks go for entertainment too. DIY is another big video hashtag because it is considered edutainment.
