New Cloudflare Turnstile Plugin Tutorial

I’m really liking the new Cloudflare Turnstile plugin for protecting my site against spam bots.

It works on the:

• Login page
• Comments
• Contact forms

And we can now eliminate plugins like Antispam Bee and Akismet. Plus we can remove the awful Google reCaptcha on our forms.

I made a new tutorial in the Webmaster Training membership for how to set it up. You’ll find it in the Cloudflare section.

Plugin Tips

Cloudflare Turnstile Works Well

As you can see, I’m really liking the Cloudflare Turnstile plugin to give better spam bot protection to my site’s login, reset password, comments, and contact forms.

I’m offering to switch my site audit clients to it during their next audit checkup.

We have been able to get rid of comment spam filter plugins as well as the reCaptcha on our contact forms.

But, we’re keeping Login Lockdown to kick hackers to the curb after 3 failed attempts on our login if they happen to get through the Turnstile check.

If you’re ready for a site audit checkup in June, or you’re ready for your first audit, now is the time to make that request.

The wait list is running about 2-3 weeks.

Domain Tips

Top Myths About Transferring Domains

Namecheap has a nice article with the biggest misunderstandings with transferring your domain to a new registrar.

The top myth is that you will lose time you have left at your current registrar.

Not true.

Let’s say you have 6 months left before your domain renews at your current registrar.

When you transfer to another registrar, like Namecheap, you pay for a new year of registration, and then the 6 months you still have left with your old registrar is added to the end of that new year.

So, your domain won’t need to be renewed at the new registrar for 18 months.

Don’t let time remaining be the reason you don’t move registrars, especially if you got your domain through a host you no longer use, like Bluehost or such.

WordPress Tips

WordPress 6.2.1 and 6.2.2 Released

Last week the maintenance release of WP 6.2.1 rolled out. It should have been an auto update for you.

Unfortunately, it broke some things on FSE sites. I don’t believe many, if any of us use FSE themes at this point, nor do I recommend them yet. So, we should be okay.

And then version 6.2.2 released a few days later to fix what got broken along with one more security update.

WordPress AI Tips

AI for WordPress Event May 25

The event I told you about a couple of weeks ago is coming up in a few days.

It’s sponsored by Human Made, which is an ironic name for a company to be talking about AI.

They finally released their speaker list.

They’ll be doing demos of Human Made’s first AI projects for WP and highlighting what leaders in the space are doing.

And they will have a panel to discuss the impact of AI on the WP industry.

Hold Off on WP AI Plugins

There are at least 50 AI plugins for WP at this point.

Most of them bring ChatGPT writing capability into WP. And some also let you create AI generated images.

There’s a reason I’m staying quiet about them.

Right now, you’re better off using the AI tools directly and not via the plugins for one primary reason.

When you are working in your site, WP is auto saving. That takes hosting resources that are best reserved for your visitors.

Do as much work as you can outside of WP.

Then copy/paste that work into your posts or pages and then add your images.

You also need to log out of your site anytime you are not actively working in it for the same reason.

AI Tips

Finding Use Cases Has Been Tough

As y’all know, I’ve been checking out all kinds of AI tools.

And I launched the AIDiscoverHub as a way to document what I find most useful or interesting, and as a way to cover AI news.

But the fact is, I’ve really struggled to find use cases for most of these AI tools that I can implement in my endeavors.

I don’t really need help writing my blog posts. In fact, there is no AI tool that can replace what I do with them, like this Tips Tuesday, and the tutorials I make.

Plus AI would have a hard time making social media posts for me considering I focus mainly on video.

Nor do I need help with writing emails. I can’t imagine an AI tool even trying to comprehend what I deal with in my inbox daily.

And I don’t need market research to pitch to other companies.

AI images have been fun to play with, but only the paid version of Midjourney has the commercial license and the quality of images I can use. But, for the most part, I still need to make my own images. AI generated ones are more or less a backdrop or such.

All these things are what AI is really good at doing right now.

But that’s about to change. And AI is going to be way more useful to me very soon – and likely to you too.

What’s Around the AI Corner

ChatGPT Plus has finally incorporated web browsing and plugins.

Bing Chat has access to the internet.

And now Bard has all that and more.

I’m finally able to do some meaningful research for current news and what’s trending.

I can also do SEO analysis on top-rankin sites.

And now I’m looking into creating graphical displays of data.

The really big improvement that will bring this all together is still in private beta.

When both Google and Microsoft bring AI tool integration to Docs and Office products, that will be the game changer for helping me automate all of the research and reading I have to do to stay on top of what’s happening with websites and AI.

Right now it’s a copy/paste chore to get these things to do what is most useful to me.

I know there are 3rd party AI services that can do it. But I’m holding out for what both Google and Microsoft have shown us is coming very soon.

I like reporting the AI news – but I’ve shying away from doing just hype of what’s coming for hype’s sake.

A lot of other AI content creators have built their whole brand around that hype. It’s exhausting to create and exhausting to read.

What I’ve been focusing on is what’s available that has some utility to it.

That’s about to explode.
