Google has made a complete mess of this changeover from Universal Analytics to GA4.
In March, they started doing auto migrations where they created a new GA4 Property for you and connected it to your UA Property to use the existing UA tags on your site.
In May, they stopped the auto migrations and popped up this counter on us.
Here’s an overview of the main 3 steps you have to do now.
Step 1
Go to your Universal Analytics Property’s admin section – you should see 3 columns.
In the second column click GA4 Setup Assistant.
If you don’t have a GA4 Property, you will be invited to create one.
Then you MUST connect your UA Property to your new GA4 Property.
Step 2
Go to your GA4 Property’s admin section – you should see 2 columns only.
In the second column, click the Setup Assistant.
You must complete all 7 steps to pass the basic configuration of your GA4 Property. But it’s still missing a lot.
Step 3
If you see any other invitations to migrate your UA, dismiss them.
If you see a warning message at the top of any of your admin pages, you may have missed something, but I’m still checking into it. And no matter what you do, the counter will not go away on your UA property at this time.
See the GA4 Course for Bloggers to get full details on all these changes as well as tutorials on how to fully set up your GA4 Property the right way.
