Sessions – GA4 Word of the Day

Sessions – that’s the Google Analytics 4 word of the day.
Let’s see it in action.

The best GA4 course for bloggers!
- Get it setup right
- Tour default reports
- Create 20+ custom reports
- Accurate metrics
Session in Standard Reports
You’ll find it listed in the Standard Report for Traffic Acquisition.
And note that it is paired with Engaged Sessions – this is important.
Session means that something opened one of your posts or pages.
But Engaged Sessions means that the Session lasted for more than 10 seconds. So that was likely a human, not a bot that rendered the page and then left.
In this report you also have Average engagement time per session and Engaged sessions per User – and all of this gives you more insight than you had in Universal Analytics.
But, in this report, it’s on the default channel group, which you can change to the Source to see the individual referrers.
Sessions in Explore Reports
However, if you create your own Explorer Report, you can customize it to show the top pages by:
- the referral source
- page title
- Sessions
- Engaged sessions
- Average session duration
- Average engagement time per session
- And more
Even better, you can choose which metric to sort on.
