See a sure-fire way to update your site to WordPress 4.9.9 while using the Easy Updates Manager plugin.
See the video tutorial below for the correct Easy Updates Manager settings.
Don’t be fooled by your site stating that the only update available is to 5.0.1 anywhere.
The At a Glance module on the Dashboard will show the version you are running correctly.
Tips for making the update go through
If you’ve waited :15 minutes and your site has not updated, try these two tricks.
Tip 1: In the EUM plugin, on the top setting for all updates, set it to Disable and then back to Enable. That seems to make it wake up and check for an update again. (Huge thank you to Marilyn Lesniak for that tip!!!!!!!!!!!)
Tip 2: Or, if your traffic has low traffic, maybe the wp-cron clock has not been triggered to run. That’s the master clock that triggers all scheduled site functions like checking for updates, doing backups, and publishing scheduled post.
In an incognito window, or while logged out, visit your site. That will trigger the wp-cron to run.
This is a security update, so don’t put this off!!!

Thanks for putting this together. And thanks for the shout out! I am excited to get this all going.
I have followed all the 4.9.9 instructions and still no update. It is only offering me 5.0.1. Any more ideas. denise
I noticed the funky part was expecting the system to allow me a choice. That wasn’t the case. It has always (and still) says update to 5.0.1 , you can do this manually. But when it updates, the newest version will say 4.9.9, there are a few places to see this. The fastest is the bottom right corner of the admin if you have that otion turned on. The next is in “updates” in the admin sidebar. It will say you are at the latest version if using the EUM plugin. Past that, check out MaAnna’s questions about your hosting.
I think you are saying to go ahead and click on updated to 5.0.1 and it will only go to 4.9.9 because of the EUM settings? Sorry to be slow at this. Also not sure what you mean by “there are a few places to see this”…see what? When I click on the WP icon in the upper left above Dashboard it still says I am running 4.9.8. I am a volunteer newly and inherited this site about a year ago. thanks for any help. denise
NO!!!! Once it updates, you will go in and see it updated. It will say current version is 4.9.9 and then say 5.0.1 is available, you can update manually. Meaning, now you can update to that if you wish. Do the setting from the video. Then turn off all updates again after 5 minutes. Come back and it shoyuld have updated. If not, then go down to core updates. Turn on, wait, turn off. And that should trigger it too. Sorry for the confusion
There may be a directive hard-coded in your wp-config.php file to not allow auto updates.
If you’re on SiteGround, until just a couple of weeks ago, they ALWAYS goofed up removing folks from their auto update program. One of those goofs was to remove their auto update directive in that file and to replace it with one that turned off all updates.
So, no matter what host you are on, you may want them to check the other files that could be blocking an update.
I am not on SiteGround, but I have never had the site update automatically. I’ve always had to click to update. Back to my last question. Are you saying I can click to update now, even though it shows 5.0.1? If that would only take me to 4.9.9 I would be good. Thank you again for helping!! I appreciate it. denise
If you click to update to WP 5.0.1, then that is the level it will update to.
If you have never gotten minor updates, then perhaps there is something hard coded on your site to stop them.
Thank you, let me look into that. I’m assuming I need to get 4.9.9 before I start the #1 workshop. Appreciate your help. I have followed your video set up for EUM Settings as well as the other tweaks suggested by Marilyn. I will contact GoDaddy. denise
I just called Go Daddy and they say they do not do that or anything associated with WordPress, they just host. So, I am stuck here. Can I still proceed with the Workshop or???? what to do? thanks. And I thought I was just going to be posting stuff with nice photos, etc. :) This onion has many layers!! denise
Yes, you can keep going with the workshop, as we’ll be updating to 5.0.1 on Sunday. That has the same security release as 4.9.9.
FYI, GoDaddy is one of THE least secure hosts. You definitely want to think about getting on a better host next year!
Thanks. Now I cannot sign in and asked for a new password, but no email coming through with one?? I even wrote it down, but…. Thanks for the above response. d
Just wanted to share my experience. I was behind most of you on this one. I followed MaAnna’s directions last night and after about 15 or 20 minutes when the update hadn’t rolled through I took her advice and went to bed. This morning the update still wasn’t showing. I went back to the easy updates manager and toggled the buttons as suggested above and a few minutes later the update was there.
Delighted to hear that all is well with your updates!!! And thanks for letting us know.
Thank you so much, MaAnna for all your work, instructions and help!
You’re so welcome Deborah. Happy to help.
