Interviewed on UnMiss Podcast
This past week I had the pleasure of being interviewed on the UnMiss Podcast where they feature industry experts such as Gary V and Neil Patel and so many more.
We chatted about Google Analytics 4 and all that it offers that you can’t get in Universal Analytics. Plus, a few tips for how to keep bots out of your analytics and more.
And, both of our dogs got in on the podcast too.
Seeking Speaking Gigs
Next year I will be doing more webinars for groups, so if you know of any blogger groups that would like to have me come speak, please do put them in touch with me.
Same for podcast or other speaking gigs too.
Seeking Sponsored Newsletters
I will also be running ads for the GA4 course next year.
And I’m particularly interested in connecting with folks who run sponsorships in their newsletters that go to bloggers and content creators of all kinds.
I already have a short list of a few that have good audiences that I’ll be contacting soon.
If you have any suggestions for newsletters that would be a good fit, please do leave a comment or email me.

GA4 Course Update
Woot! All of the tutorials for setting up Google Analytics 4 and how to read and customize the Standard Reports are complete.
Since last week I’ve been creating the custom Explore report tutorials and all of the Acquisition custom report examples are ready.
This is the real power of GA4 and with these reports you can get the same kind of metrics you are used to seeing in Universal Analytics.
I help you create a master report for:
- Acquisition
- Engagement
- Clicks – yes, clicks!!
With GA4, you can see what link was clicked and on which page. Woohoo!!!
There are 20+ report examples that are super fast and fun to make.
You won’t need to buy any templates.
You’ll be a master report maker and can see anything you want, any way you want to see it!
Please do tell your blogging buddies about this course that is made specifically for them, and to get it while it’s $100 off too!!
That’s all the happenings around here. Let’s jump into this week’s tips.
Social Media Tips
Mastodon is a maybe for me
A few weeks ago I mentioned that I was checking into Mastodon as a Twitter alternative.
It’s a fascinating concept of independent, Federated Networks.
That means there are individually run servers that host their own instance of Mastodon and run under their own rules.
Think of them as hubs.
And then all of the hubs can also talk to each other.
So, the whole thing is decentralized, meaning if one server goes down, it has no impact on the rest of the servers.
That is the beauty and the bane of it.
To sign up for Mastodon, you first have to choose a server, or elect to run your own.
As mentioned, each one is run independently with its own hardware and its own rules.
So, if that server ever has issues, you can’t access Mastodon anymore unless you join another server.
And while each server has its own focus, or niche, that seems like pretty shaky ground to build your presence on, even more so than centralized platforms like Twitter and Facebook and such.
I may join if I can find a server that suits my interests.
And if that is fruitful, great.
It’s always good to try new things and meet new folks.
But it’s not something I want to ever rely on heavily for conversion, at least not at this time.
I’ll keep you posted with how it goes, and if I find a worthwhile server.
Social Video Tips
Y’all, Video Works!!!
I am SO happy to be active on TikTok again.
I was really having fun making those videos. But they were attracting ill-fitting clients, very much like all of the Facebook blogger groups I finally got out of.
But with the GA4 course, those videos are attracting all the right folks.
My views went from 80 to 1300 per video.
And I got 20 new followers in one day.
Plus, I’m finally establishing a presence on Instagram. That’s moving along slower than TikTok, but it’s new.
And my YouTube videos are definitely starting to attract more attention.
The third GA4 one I uploaded last week started getting hits within 10 minutes.
I hope to do at least 3 videos a week.
And they are so fun to make!!!
I’m trying different looks and lengths with them, which is the really fun and creative part of it for me.
And this week I’ll be doing some new things with relatively still graphics, or totally still graphics too, meaning just text that has a jiggly background, or stills that slide.
Plus, I’ll be putting some trending music behind them to see if that helps them get seen more too. I did one, and it helped.
So, videos certainly don’t have to be talking head or voiceover types.
I’m seeing my clients use their still shots for recipe videos that have me drooling myself and wanting that recipe.
Action shots of what you’re doing work too.
There are just too many ways to make it easy and fun not to get into creating videos now.
Give it a go. You’ll see!!
How to Repurpose Video Content
Once you get the hang of it, making videos can actually take less time than creating a blog post.
And the nice folks at the Content Marketing Institute have a good article on all of the ways you can repurpose your videos, including those carousel type foodie videos I mentioned that have slides.
Repurpose YouTube Videos to TikTok
Posting your shorter videos on TikTok and Instagram also works for posting onto YouTube, even if they are too long for Shorts, as most of mine are around 90 seconds instead of under 60.
But, there are ways to repost your longer YouTube videos to TikTok too.
This article from TubeBuddy has tips for doing that.
They tell you about the importance of a lead hook and storytelling techniques, which I can confirm all work.
But if you do this, consider making just a clip for TikTok if it’s a longer YouTube video. Short is better on TikTok and IG.
Consider Watchtime for Video Podcast
While I’m researching how to up my marketing game for the GA4 course, I seriously considered repurposing the Tips Tuesday podcast into a video for YouTube Podcasts.
But here’s why I won’t be doing that.
Average watchtime is a huge ranking factor on YouTube.
And with me making all these 60-90 second videos, if I put up a 15 minute video that gets low average watchtime, that’s going to kill my overall average watchtime, and kill my shorter videos in the algorithm.
That’s precisely why I created the BlogAid Live YouTube channel when I was doing a live show for deeper info on Tips Tuesday. Those shows ran about an hour.
And I think it’s confusing to have multiple YouTube channels to send viewers to as well.
Plus, there are literally 100s of places folks can find my podcast already.
So, while every new way to repurpose content may be available, be sure you see how it fits into your current content marketing strategy before you do it.
Trending Music Works
This weekend, I wanted to try something different with my videos so I could get both a trending look and, more importantly, use trending music.
If you’re following me on TikTok or Instagram, or even Facebook, you know that I like to do talking head videos.
I just like recording and editing on desktop more than doing them on phone.
And I’ve found ways to let me upload my videos from desktop too.
But, uploading from desktop doesn’t allow me to use all of the features on the apps, like adding music.
So, I recorded a video with my phone of me standing out on the deck and looking at the camera now and then.
Then I transferred that video from my phone to my PC so I could edit easily.
Then I uploaded the final version to Google Drive where I could also access the Drive app on my iPad and then save it to my videos there.
From there it was easy to create the TikTok and IG videos as an upload from my iPad. And I could use trending music from each of those apps.
Now, some folks use the same music on both apps. But, you could run into copyright issues if that music is not licensed on the other app.
Plus, both apps may have different trending music clips too.
And yes, there were a LOT of steps involved in doing this 15 second video compared to just doing it all on desktop.
But, using trending music can trigger the app’s algorithm to show your video to a LOT more folks.
Y’all, this is an eyeballs game. Do whatever you have to do to win.
And I have to tell you, I don’t dance on videos. But I sure was doing a happy dance when I figured out how to do all the steps!
Celebrate your wins – all of them.
It’s all baby steps, but every new thing you do puts you one step closer to your goals than you were the day before.
Media Kit Tips
How to Make a Media Kit for Your Creator Business
Let me tell you how powerful it is to build your video audience.
I’ve got clients who are nearly exhausted trying to get to all the brand sponsorship deals laying on their table.
Those content creators are making bank, big time.
If you’d like to work with brands and/or get more media exposure, you definitely need to create a Media Kit to make it simple for them.
The nice folks at The Tilt have an excellent post on how to do just that.
And guess what? Canva even has templates for it too.
This is on my to do list for this week for sure.
SEO Tips
Yoast Interface Redesign Coming Soon
Team Yoast has long wanted to jump the confine fence of the insanely dated looking WP admin pages.
And when they released Yoast for Shopify, that only fueled their desire to build a more modern interface for their WP products too.
So they did.
You can see a screenshot of the new settings page in their announcement post.
This thing is still in alpha testing, so definitely not something you want to download or use on a live site right now.
I’ll be testing the beta when it comes out in a few weeks.
And I’ll have new tutorials in DIY SEO course after it releases on Jan 24th, which is their current target date.
I might also do a public video with a tour of the new look too.
